Your doctor may recommend an ECG if you have chest pain, a racing heart, or other heart problems. You do not need to do anything special to prepare for an ECG. You may have your chest, arm, or leg hair shaved or your skin cleansed prior to the ECG to ensure that the electrodes stick effectively to your body. If you are wearing a bra, you may be asked to take it off. During an ECG, leads are connected to electrodes using sticky dots placed on your arms, legs, and chest. The leads are wired to a machine that reads the data.
