BERA Hearing Test, also known as Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry Auditory Brain Stem Response or ABR audiometry or BAER or Brainstem auditory evoked response audiometry, is a neurophysiological method for evaluating the hearing threshold and diagnosing retro-cochlear lessons in children with hearing loss and delayed speech. Bera is a method of objectively inducing brain stem potentials in response to audiological stimuli, most notably click stimuli. Electrodes, which are inserted on the scalp, aid in the recording of these potentials. BERA is a useful screening technique for assessing cases of hearing loss caused by retro cochlear pathology, such as acoustic schwannoma. If there is an abnormal BERA, an MRI scan may be recommended. The BERA test should be combined with additional audiological test batteries to determine the location of the lesion and plan management accordingly.
