An imaging examination called an IVP looks at the ureters and kidneys. The little tubes that connect the kidneys and bladder to transport urine are called ureters. The radiologist will inject a contrast dye into one of your veins during the procedure. He or she follows the contrast dye as it travels from the kidney via the ureter and ultimately to the bladder using X-ray pictures. A obstruction in the blood flow through a kidney may be indicated by dye that travels too slowly or not at all. It could also indicate that there is a problem with the kidney, ureter, or bladder's normal functioning. If your doctor believes you could have kidney illness or a urinary tract issue, they might request this test. A tiny quantity of radiation is used during an X-ray to produce images of your inside organs and bones. An example of an X-ray is an IVP. This examination may be performed together with a renal CT scan (urography). Contrast dye is also used in CT scans. It creates pictures of the kidney that display layers or "slices."
