The BERA Hearing Test also referred to as the Brainstem Evoked Response Audiometry Auditory Brain Stem Response, Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response, Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response Audiometry, Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response Audiometry, or BAER, is a neurophysiological technique for determining the hearing threshold and identifying retro-cochlear lessons in children with hearing loss and delayed speech. Using a technique called Bera, brain stem potentials can be objectively induced in response to various audiological stimuli, most notably click stimuli. These potentials are recorded with the use of electrodes implanted into the scalp. For evaluating hearing loss cases brought on by retro cochlear pathology, such as acoustic schwannoma, BERA is a helpful screening tool. An MRI scan may be advised if the BERA is abnormal. To pinpoint the lesion's location and make management decisions accordingly, the BERA test should be used in conjunction with additional audiological test batteries.
