An X-ray test called an IVP, or intravenous pyelogram, shows images of the kidneys, urethra, bladder, and ureters. An IVP can assess what is accumulated inside the kidneys and examine the size, shape, and location of the urinary tract. A dye known as contrast material is injected into the arm during this test, after which several X-rays are taken at various intervals. IVP is frequently used to detect infections, kidney stones, tumors, and disorders of the urinary tract. If more information regarding the urinary system is required, an IVP can be paired with an ultrasound or CT scan.
