An intravenous pyelogram (IVP) is an X-ray that examines your kidneys, bladder, and the ducts (ureters) that link them. It is not commonly used. CT scans and other types of imaging examinations are more common. Your doctor will provide you with specific advice for preparing for your IVP study. You will most likely be told not to eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your exam. The evening before the treatment, you may be requested to take a mild laxative (in tablet or liquid form).
