A digital X-ray, also known as digital radiography, is a type of X-ray that uses digital sensors rather than photographic film, as in a regular X-ray. The taken image is promptly transformed into digital data and is ready for examination within seconds. The process for digital X-rays is quite similar to traditional X-rays; the technology is significantly different. Bursts of radiation continue to pass through the body, forming an image based on how much radiation passes through the various organs, but instead of photographic film, digital sensors are used to capture the image. Digital X-ray sensors are typically active matrix flat panels composed of a detecting layer on top of an active matrix array of thin film transistors and photodiodes. These sensors can convert an image into digital form in real-time, allowing the doctor to quickly view the results on a computer.
